Introduction
to Spatial Pattern Analysis in a GIS Environment - Travel
& Accommodations
Suggested Travel Itinerary:
Arrive Santa Barbara, Sunday, 27 July
Depart Santa Barbara, Saturday, 2 August
The small Santa Barbara Airport is served by the following
airlines:
There is no UCSB shuttle from the SB airport to the campus
housing (Manzanita Village).
>> Driving from LAX
The drive is approximately 2 hours from LAX to Santa Barbara
(UCSB campus).
>> Directions to Manzanita Village
From northbound Highway 101, take the UCSB/Ward Memorial Blvd
exit. Upon entering the campus, you will pass the Kiosk at
the Campus entrance -- stay in the R lane. Take the yield
to the right at the first traffic signal – you are now
on Mesa Road. Then turn left onto Ocean Road at the 2nd traffic
signal. Stay on Ocean Road, which curves around through 3
traffic signals. After the 3rd traffic signal, you will see
the Events Center THUNDERDOME on your left. Keep going and
when Ocean Road dead-ends, the Manzanita Village complex will
be on your left.
>> Transportation recommendation -- from Santa
Barbara Airport to the Manzanita Village [Travel
Map]:
This is a very short ride from the airport to Manzanita Village,
and we recommend the SuperRide shuttle (683-9636) -- no advance
reservations necessary -- very convenient and less expensive
than taxis (usually large white van, big blue lettering on
sides and top "SuperRide"). There is usually a shuttle
waiting at the airport for deplaning passengers, so you may
not need to call for service. If not, use the courtesy phone
in the baggage claim area to call. ($6 one-way, $12 rd-trip)
Bottom line: SuperRide is a better deal! (If SuperRide is
unavailable, we recommend Blue Dolphin Taxi.)
Accommodations
Unless you state otherwise on your Information Request Form
(IRF), we assume that each of you will accept our offer to
stay in the UCSB-owned Manzanita Village (on campus). The
cost of the six-night private room accommodation (Sunday-Friday)
is extremely reasonable at $325 per person. This amount will
be deducted from your $500 CSISS scholarship, and the balance
check ($175) will be remitted to you on-site at the close
of the workshop. (Note: For non-U.S. citizens who do not have
a Social Security number or an ITIN, the balance will be processed
for you via a Travel Expense Voucher to be detailed later
on an individual basis.)
Workshop lodging (private rooms) will be provided at Manzanita
Village, the newest addition to the Housing program at the
University of California, Santa Barbara. This new complex
opened in Fall 2002 and provides “no frills” residence
hall style housing to UCSB visitors and students. Each building
has a lobby area, a laundry/vending room, a lounge with view
terrace, and a study room. Some buildings are equipped with
full kitchens.
>> Details are as follows:
- Check-in time/date: begins 12 noon, Sunday, 27 July
- Checkout time/date: must vacate by 12 noon, Saturday,
2 August
- Check-in Location: Manzanita Village, De Anza Resource
Center
- Address: dead-end of Ocean Road, UCSB Campus
>> Check-in at Manzanita Village: The check-in
desk at the De Anza Resource Center will be open
very, very late on Sunday, 27 July. Check-in will remain open
until at least 1 am, Monday morning. So no fear if you arrive
late on Sunday evening. [Check-in
Map]
>> Your private room - There is one single
bed with full linen and bedding, a closet, a desk, and a built-in
bookshelf and dresser. (Beds are made up once a week.) Hall
bathrooms are shared among 4 rooms. The building is not air
conditioned -- not usually a problem here in Santa Barbara.
All workshop lodging reservations (Sunday-Friday) at Manzanita
Village will be arranged by the CSISS staff at UCSB. So there
is no need for you to contact Manzanita Village directly.
Please indicate your lodging preference on the IRF. However,
if you need accommodation for early arrival or late departure,
please see the heading below providing information for those
options.
>> Things to consider bringing:
- cell phone and/or calling card – Rooms do not have
phone lines or internet access. Pay phones in lobby and
lounge.
- alarm clock
- clothes hangers
- sweater or jacket! Very important -- for our California
coastal weather can be quite chilly, especially after sunset.
- resource materials/data related directly to workshop content:
Dr. Getis will soon send an email to all workshop participants
re: this. Also, the info will be posted soon on your workshop
website.
>> Meals are on your own -- with the exception
of a Thursday evening BarBQ we will host at the BEACH!
>> Reminder: Payment for your lodging at Manzanita
Village will be deducted from your $500 scholarship amount.
Due to internal campus guidelines, CSISS must pay for your
lodging internally. Therefore, we will subtract your lodging
from your $500 scholarship, and at the close of the workshop,
you will be given a check for the balance. If you prefer to
select your own lodging, please indicate that choice on your
IRF. Please contact LaNell Lucius if you have any questions:
(805) 893-8504, lanell@ncgia.ucsb.edu.
>> Early arrival or late departure
For early arrival on Sat. 7/26 or late departure on Sun.
8/3, please contact the Manzanita Guest House for additional
lodging. This is "no frills" on-campus lodging especially
for campus visitors that are conducting University business.
Room rates are $55 per night. Payment is by Visa, MasterCard
or American Express credit cards only. Advance reservations
are strongly recommended--call 805-893-8181 or register on-line
at http://www.housing.ucsb.edu/conference/guesthouse.htm.
For additional information, please visit the above website.
Campus Parking
Permits are required in all areas of campus Monday through
Friday from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM. It will be helpful to stop
at the kiosk (entry to campus) in order to receive parking
information and maps. You will be provided instructions on
where to park and how to use the self-pay machines. Short-term
permits may be purchased for $7/day from the self-pay machines
installed in each parking lot. (Kiosk personnel will not be
able to handle parking fees or cash.) No permit is needed
for the 30-minute metered spaces (but the meter must be fed).
As a visitor, you will park in lots allowing "C"
(commuter) parking.
More information can be found at the UCSB Transportation and
Parking Services website: http://www.tps.ucsb.edu/visitor.html
(click on commuter parking permit)
Workshop Class Location/Time

Miscellaneous
Workshop dress: Bring lots of shorts and comfortable
cotton shirts -- workshop is casual dress, but the classroom
and labs may be chilly. So you may want to bring a sweater/jacket
to the classes.
Santa Barbara weather: usually temperate during
the day (in the high 60s to high 70s), but rather chilly in
the evenings. Be sure to bring a sweater or light jacket (depending
on your personal thermometer!), especially to the BarBQ Thursday
evening.
